The general aim of the course is to provide military officers, including operators and military lawyers, as well as civilians, with the opportunity to learn how to apply the principles and rules of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC). The teaching methodology used for this course includes a combination of central presentations and class work.

The class work itself consists largely of a series of exercises conducted under the guidance of class leaders using classic current military planning and staff processes, leading the course through a series of IHL and other relevant legal issues arising during military operations at all levels of intensity.

19th Competition on LOAC for Military Academies @ IIHL

The Academies Competition provides teams of 3 Officer Cadets from the top military academies from around the world with an early appreciation of the critical importance of humanitarian law in multi-national military operations. This is achieved by dividing the cadets into multi-national mixed teams representing fictional countries involved in an escalating international military operations.

The Advanced Course on IHL is an intensive course designed for experienced military/civilian legal advisers, military officers and those from Government or International Organisations with an in depth knowledge of IHL. Academics and students with an interest in developing a deeper understanding of the subject area are also very welcome to attend. Given the relatively short length of the course it is assumed participants will already have a sound knowledge of IHL principles and rules and be able to apply these in a practical context.
