International Round Table on current problems of IHL

The Round Table on current issues of international humanitarian law, organized by the Institute every year in September in co-operation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, is an international gathering very much appreciated by the international community as it offers an opportunity for periodic dialogue and debate on crucial topics of international humanitarian law.

Traditionally organized in close cooperation with the ICRC, this year the Round Table will take place in Sanremo from 6 to 8 September 2018

International Military Course on IHL (Spanish, Portuguese) @ IIHL

Al igual que en los dos últimos años, el Instituto se propone llevar adelante dos Cursos. El “163º Curso Militar Internacional”, que es un curso de base y que se llevará a cabo entre el 5 y el 16 de septiembre (español y portugués). Luego, prácticamente de manera consecutiva (entre el 19 y el 27 del mismo mes), el “33º Curso Avanzado” que, como su denominación lo indica, está destinado a personas que han superado el nivel inicial en esta temática (solo en español).

Advanced Course on IHL (Spanish) @ IIHL

Al igual que en los tres últimos años, el Instituto se propone llevar adelante dos Cursos. El Curso Militar Internacional, que es un curso de base y que se llevará a cabo entre el 5 y el 16 de septiembre (español y portugués). Luego, prácticamente de manera consecutiva (entre el 19 y el 27 del mismo mes), el Curso Avanzado que, como su denominación lo indica, está destinado a personas que han superado el nivel inicial en esta temática (solo español).

Directors Course (Spanish) TBC @ IIHL

El propósito del Curso es posibilitar a aquellos oficiales del Estado Mayor de Defensa, los cuarteles o sedes de las Fuerzas Armadas y/u otros organismos militares a cargo de la planificación de la enseñanza del DIH, analizar las necesidades, definir los objetivos, desarrollar los programas de enseñanza e integrarlos a los programas de la educación permanente de las distintas categorías de personal dentro de las Fuerzas Armadas.

Targeting Course @ IIHL

This four day targeting course is an intensive training designed for experienced military/civilian legal advisers, Military targeteers and planners, Officers and those from Government or International organisations with a sound knowledge of either IHL or targeting operations. Academics and students with an interest in developing a deeper understanding of the subject area are also very welcome to attend. Given the relatively short length of the course, it is assumed participants will already have a sound knowledge of IHL principles and rules and be able to apply these in a practical context.

Rules of Engagement Course @ IIHL

The Institute’s RoE Course is the only international training totally focusing on Rules of Engagement design and development.  Aimed at commanders, legal advisors, and other staff officers, this course is must-have training for those who are involved in mission planning and the development of rules for using force during military operations.

Naval Operations and the Law @ IIHL

The course will seek to examine and understand the legal regime affecting the planning and conduct of Naval Operations across the entire spectrum of conflict providing participants with an opportunity to assess whether legal and operational gaps in the law exist and, if so, what steps could be taken to remedy the situation.

International Military Course on IHL (English, Chinese, Russian) @ IIHL

The general aim of the course is to provide military officers, including operators and military lawyers, as well as civilians, with the opportunity to learn how to apply the principles and rules of the Laws of Armed Conflict (LOAC). The teaching methodology used for this course comprises a combination of central presentations and class work. The class work itself consists largely of a series of exercises conducted under the guidance of class leaders using classic current military planning and staff processes, leading the course through a series of IHL and other relevant legal issues arising during military operations at all levels of intensity.

Directors Course (French) @ IIHL

International Humanitarian Law (IHL) places a duty on States to ensure knowledge of and respect for its implementation. This duty obliges States to ensure that all members of their armed forces are properly trained on IHL according to the requirements of the various levels of responsibility. IHL is a vast subject, requiring different approaches according to the specific circumstances.

The Course for Directors and Instructors of Training Programmes in IHL is designed for military officers, military lawyers and others responsible in planning IHL training and education programmes or those who are involved in writing doctrine, determining training requirements, curriculum development, the design of course modules and materials for IHL education within their armed forces (Directors) and military officers and military lawyers responsible for teaching IHL (Instructors).
