175th International Military Course on LOAC (French) @ Ecole des commissaires des armées

L’objectif général de ce cours, organisé auprés de l’Ecole des commissaires des armées de Salon-de- Provence (France), est de fournir aux officiers des forces armées, y compris les conseillers juridiques et les avocats militaires, ainsi que des professionnels civils, la possibilité d’apprendre comment s’appliquent les principes et règles du droit des conflits armés. A l’issue du cours, les participants auront acquis une connaissance solide des principes fondamentaux et des règles du droit des conflits armés et pourront mettre en pratique leur connaissance dans le cadre de différents théâtres opérationnels.

The Advanced Course on IHL is an intensive course designed for experienced military/civilian legal advisers, military officers and those from Government or International Organisations with an in depth knowledge of IHL. Academics and students with an interest in developing a deeper understanding of the subject area are also very welcome to attend. Given the relatively short length of the course it is assumed participants will already have a sound knowledge of IHL principles and rules and be able to apply these in a practical context.

Le cours avancé sur le DIH, organisé avec le concours de l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, vise à fournir une approche pratique et contemporaine de haut niveau sur les questions du DIH avec une attention particulière à celles ayant une influence sur l’interopérabilité lors des opérations multinationales. Les conférenciers sont des universitaires de renom ainsi que des juristes militaires qui, à travers l’étude de problématiques contemporaines, fourniront des points de vues pratiques pour faire face aux questions qui se posent dans l’environnement opérationnel contemporain. Du temps sera consacré à des séances de questions-réponses afin d’encourager l’interaction entre les participants et les conférenciers avec pour objectif de promouvoir des débats riches et variés.

50th Course for directors and instructors of training programmes in IHL @ IIHL

nternational Humanitarian Law (IHL) places a duty on States to ensure knowledge of and respect for its implementation. This duty obliges States to ensure that all members of their armed forces are properly trained on IHL according to the requirements of the various levels of responsibility. IHL is a vast subject, requiring different approaches according to the specific circumstances.

The Course for Directors and Instructors of Training Programmes in IHL is designed for military officers, military lawyers and others responsible in planning IHL training and education programmes or those who are involved in writing doctrine, determining training requirements, curriculum development, the design of course modules and materials for IHL education within their armed forces (Directors) and military officers and military lawyers responsible for teaching IHL (Instructors).

The aim of this course is to prepare civilian and military staff augmentees for Peace Support Operations (PSOs) by examining the wide ranging legal issues underpinning PSO mandates and mission design which shape and govern the conduct of operations of the deployed force

The course is designed for the following personnel: civilian and military staff augmentees to PSOs, planning staffs and their advisors; personnel who work in or with ministries of defence, foreign affairs, interior, or law enforcement; personnel working in international organisations, non-governmental organisations etc and/or missions of the UN and any of the regional organisations.

Detention and captured personnel (CPERS) Course @ IIHL

This five day course examines current issues concerning detention in three of its phases from a range of perspectives. The Course will start by reviewing the current and emerging law relating to the legal basis and authorities to detain in armed conflict. Areas of both legal and practical concern will be examined before reviewing the direction of travel including the Copenhagen Process.

International Round Table on current issues of IHL

The Round Table on current issues of international humanitarian law, organized by the Institute every year in September in co-operation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, is an international gathering very much appreciated by the international community as it offers an opportunity for periodic dialogue and debate on crucial topics of international humanitarian law.

Traditionally organized in close cooperation with the ICRC, this year the Round Table will take place in Sanremo from 4 to 6 September 2019
