The course will consider the ways in which effects are delivered in accordance with the law through targeting, Rules of Engagement (ROE) and the use of cyber capability. In doing so it will examine the processes involved and the way the law impacts upon these. Sanremo is one of the few places where training in targeting and ROE is delivered in an unclassified forum.

The course is designed for the following personnel: civilian and military staff augmentees to PSOs, planning staffs and their advisors; personnel who work in or with ministries of defence, foreign affairs, interior, or law enforcement; personnel working in international organisations, non-governmental organisations etc and/or missions of the UN and any of the regional organisations.

Detention and captured persons (CPERS) Course

181st International Military Course on LOAC (English, Arabic)

The general aim of the course is to provide military officers, including operators and military lawyers, as well as civilians, with the opportunity to learn how to apply the principles and rules of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC). The teaching methodology used for this course includes a combination of central presentations and class work.

The class work itself consists largely of a series of exercises conducted under the guidance of class leaders using classic current military planning and staff processes, leading the course through a series of IHL and other relevant legal issues arising during military operations at all levels of intensity.
