Background of the Institute

The International Institute of Humanitarian Lawis an independent, non-profit humanitarian association founded in 1970 in Sanremo, Italy. The Institute, headquartered in Sanremo, Italy, and a Liaison Office in Geneva, Switzerland, organizes training courses in international humanitarian law, human rights, refugee law, and related issues. It promotes dialogue by organizing international conferences, meetings, and seminars for high-level government officials, scholars, and practitioners.

The Institute enjoys a global reputation of excellence and has consultative status at ECOSOC, a participatory status at the Council of Europe, and observer status at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ExCom, as well as with the International Organization for Migration.

The mission of the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law (the Department) is to enhance the knowledge and skills of government officials, international organizations, civil society representatives, and academics involved in working with individuals in need of protection, including refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless individuals, and migrants. Through its capacity-building initiatives and the exchange of experiences, the Department advocates for preserving human rights, thus complementing and augmenting the efforts of various stakeholders in the protection field. In 2024 alone, the Department’s team of more than 30 professionals from 16 countries developed and implemented 60 initiatives that benefited over 2300 participants from 167 countries.

Purpose of the Call

The Department is committed to inclusive and participatory approaches that reflect the diversity and lived realities of the populations it serves. Recognizing the critical role of persons with forced displacement or stateless backgrounds in shaping more responsive and sustainable solutions, we are establishing a roster of collaborators from these communities to engage with us in various capacities.

Who Can Apply

We welcome anyone with a refugee, asylum-seeking, internally displaced, or stateless background who:

  • Possess expertise and/or experience in relevant fields;
  • Are proficient in English. Knowledge of other UN languages, such as French, Arabic,  Spanish, and Russian, is a plus;
  • Are available to work remotely with a reliable internet connection;
  • Are available to work flexible hours, preferably willing to work on Central European Time (CET/CEST – Rome time zone).

Note: We do not require candidates to have obtained a university degree or formal work history to contribute. We value lived experience in the areas below and motivation.

Areas of Expertise (including but not limited to)

  • Graphic Design, content creation, and visual communication
  • Social media and communications support
  • Online learning support and managing digital platforms
  • Courses design and facilitation of sessions
  • Research of legal framework, policies, procedures, and reports
  • Professional translation, editing and proofreading

    • Your personal background and lived experience
    • Experience in selected area/s of expertise
    • Motivation for joining the roster
  2. A current CV or résumé

Selection and Assignment

Qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview. Selected applicants will be included in the roster and may be contacted on a rolling basis for tasks. Inclusion in the roster does not guarantee immediate assignment nor employment with the Institute.
