Strengthening cooperation on dissemination of IHL: Institute’s President visits the Lieber Institute at USMA West Point

In June 2025, the President of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, General (Ret.) Giorgio Battisti, and the Secretary-General, Mr. Gian Luca Beruto, visited the Lieber Institute for Law and Land Warfare at the United States Military Academy, West Point.

The visit marked a significant step forward in the collaboration between the two institutions, which share a deep commitment to the promotion and dissemination of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). During the visit, discussions focused on shared objectives, research priorities, and opportunities for academic and operational cooperation in the field of IHL and the law of armed conflict.

A highlight of the visit was the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the IIHL and the Lieber Institute. This agreement formalizes the partnership between the two institutions and outlines key areas of cooperation, including joint research, mutual participation in academic events, and the exchange of expertise and training resources.

This visit, and the signing of the MoU, reflects the IIHL’s continuing mission to serve as a global platform for advancing the understanding and application of International Humanitarian Law in both military and civilian contexts.
