The Round Table returns live in Sanremo after two years

The 45th Sanremo Round Table on Current Issues of IHL, traditionally organised in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, has finally come to an end last Friday.

After two years of online gatherings due to the pandemic-related restrictions, this year’s edition was held for the very first time in more than 50 years of activity of the Institute at Villa Ormond, the Institute’s prestigious headquarters, from 7 to 9 September 2022.

In light of the great success of the event, the Institute wishes to thank all the contributors, experts and practitioners for their valuable support, looking forward to the publication of the Proceedings in the next months and to next year’s edition of its Round Table on current issues of IHL!

The Sanremo Round Table focused on “After the conflict before the peace: legal, military and humanitarian issues during the transition“, investigating most of the crucial issues concerning the application of IHL in post-conflict situations by examining the lessons learnt from recent operations, as well as the legal, military and humanitarian issues experienced during post conflict transitions. This included, among other key aspects, the legal responsibility of military and humanitarian practitioners towards the civilian population; the challenges related to the evacuation of non-combatants from conflict areas – with a specific focus on the Afghan – and the legal status of evacuated civilians; the issue of the responsibility of governments and individuals towards refugees and IDPs; the disarmament and infrastructure reconstruction processes.

Around 150 experts, on-site in Sanremo and connected with the Institute remotely, took part in the IIHL flagship event, while more than 30 panelists contributed to this unique 2022 edition.
