On 16 May 2022, the International Institute of Humanitarian Law made a pledge in support of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) on the occasion of the launch of the International Migration Review Forum.
The Institute, through its Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law, has committed itself to develop and deliver capacity-building programs on International Migration Law for government officials, members of the civil society, migrant and diaspora organizations, academia and other relevant migration stakeholders.
The trainings will be designed in line with the GCM’s Guiding Principles and tailored to advance its key objectives. In this regard, attendees will receive training on a wide range of topics including rights and obligations of migrant workers, protection at sea, prevention and countering of trafficking and smuggling, border management, detention and alternatives to detention, return, integration and reintegration of migrants.
In the fulfillment of its pledge, the Institute’s capacity-building programs will be targeted to carefully-selected migration stakeholders who have the greatest potential to enhance global governance and coordination on migration and ensure the safety, dignity and human rights of all migrants. Additionally, the Institute commits to providing scholarship opportunities to candidates from the Global South, ensuring geographical and professional diversity as well as gender balance in the selection of participants in its training. Through tailored training supported by experienced facilitators from various professional backgrounds, the Institute will facilitate the development of key competencies and sharing of best practices consistent with the GCM and its guiding principles, among participants.
The International Migration Review Forum takes place from 17 to 20 May 2022 and is organized by the United Nations Network on Migration to serve as the primary intergovernmental global platform for Member States and relevant stakeholders to discuss and share progress on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
The pledging initiative of the International Migration Review Forum facilitates the review of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and is meant to assist actors in contributing to its implementation.
Through this initiative, the Institute renews its commitment to promoting International Migration Law, fostering dialogue and peer-to-peer exchanges and supporting relevant stakeholders worldwide in building and consolidating capacity for its implementation.
