The Institute announces the sad departure of Ambassador Cornelio Sommaruga.
A lifelong friend of the San Remo Institute and a frequent participant in the annual Sanremo Round Table, his Institute’s honorary membership dates back to 2000.
Ambassador Cornelio Sommaruga was President of the International Committee of the Red Cross from 1987 to 1999 during a key historical period between the end of the Cold War era and the dramatic 1990s, when the Soviet Union retired its troops from Afghanistan after a long war, Yugoslavia plunged into a murderous armed conflict, and Rwanda suffered the infamous genocide.
His verve and tireless commitment left a deep imprint on the whole humanitarian world, inspiring generations of young people to continue working for the dissemination of the fundamental principles and values of IHL.
