33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

The Institute took part in the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement held in Geneva from 9 to 12 December 2019. The Conference provided the occasion for the Institute’s delegation to attend several thematic sessions on different topics of IHL and meet representatives of the Movement. The International Conference is the highest deliberative body of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and it is a unique event which is convened every 4 years. It brings together the world’s largest humanitarian network and governments to discuss the most important humanitarian challenges. The Institute participated in the Conference as an Observer. Prof. Greppi, President of the Institute, along with Mr. Beruto, Assistant to the Secretary-General of the Institute and Michel Veuthey, former Vice-President and currently in charge of the Institute’s liaison office in Geneva, met Dr. Gilles Carbonnier, Vice-President of the ICRC on Tuesday 10 December. The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the consolidated partnership existing between the Sanremo Institute and the ICRC, which goes back to the very foundation of the Institute, and how to further enhance such collaboration, also in view of the coming celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the Institute. A formal session for members and observers to deliver formal statements was provided during the Conference. Prof. Greppi made an official intervention to highlight the Institute’s 50 year-old commitment to the development, dissemination and implementation of international humanitarian law through its courses for military officers coming from all regions of the world, and stressed its keenness to continue and strengthen collaboration with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, as well as with the States Parties to the Geneva Conventions and the United Nations agencies sharing the same mission and the same humanitarian values.
