The International Institute of Humanitarian Law is an independent institution with the mission to promote dissemination, application and the development of international humanitarian law, refugee law, migration law and human rights.
In fifty years, since its creation, thousands of military officers representing nearly all the nations in the world have attended its training courses in a spirit of good faith and humanitarian dialogue.
While urging an immediate end to the international armed conflict in Ukraine through appropriate means of peaceful settlement, the Institute recalls the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law:
- Humanity
- Distinction between civilians and combatants and between civilian objects and military objects
- Proportionality
- Prohibition of superfluous injury and unnecessary suffering
To be observed by all States and individuals involved in the hostilities.
