Location: remote/home-based with reliable internet connection
Contractual modality: 6 months consultancy contract with possibility of extension

Background of the Institute
The International Institute of Humanitarian Law is an independent, non-profit, humanitarian association founded in 1970 in Sanremo, Italy. The Institute organizes training courses in the fields of international humanitarian law, human rights, refugee law, and related issues and promotes dialogue by organizing international conferences, meetings, and seminars of high-level government officials, scholars, and practitioners.

The mission of the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law is to enhance the knowledge and skills of government officials, international organizations, civil society representatives, and academics involved in working with individuals in need of protection, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), stateless individuals, and migrants. Through its capacity-building initiatives and the exchange of experiences, the Department advocates for the preservation of human rights, thus complementing and augmenting the efforts of various stakeholders in the field of protection.

The Institute enjoys a consultative status at ECOSOC, a participatory status at the Council of Europe, and observer status at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ExCom, and with the International Organization for Migration.

Purpose of the role
The Junior Collaborator provides operational support to the overall work of the Institutional Engagement Unit and the delivery of specific activities, including specific research, preparation of learning and promotional materials, support in the implementation of sessions, using online learning tools, data and legal analysis, as well as outreach and external activities.

The main responsibilities are as follows:
Academic Engagement and Outreach

  • Assist in mapping and tracking key stakeholders;
  • Assist in conducting preliminary desk research and drafting succinct factsheets;
  • Support in data collection and monitoring;
  • Support in the development of internal documents, such as Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Support in updating internal databases and work plans;
  • Assist in organizational and logistical tasks for the preparation and implementation of the online courses;
  • Assist in the collection of useful material and learning resources for the courses as well as for outreach activities;
  • Assist in the administrative and technical processes of the activities and tailored initiatives developed by the Department;
  • Support with the graphic design of the Department’s learning products and media communication;
  • Support with translations of key documents (e.g. correspondence with participants, course content, broadcasts);
  • Conduct any other tasks deemed necessary to achieve the Department’s objectives.

Qualifications and experience

  • Recently graduated (no more than two years) in social sciences, including law, political sciences, international relations, communications, and others;
  • Background in International Law, Human Rights and Refugee Law is an asset;
  • A maximum of 2 years of working experience, including paid internships;
  • Have advanced knowledge of corporate softwares such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Strong organizational and planning skills;
  • Attention to detail, and accuracy;
  • Good social and communication skills as well as a proactive, professional and positive attitude;
  • Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Canva, Moodle and Zoom for Education is an asset;
  • Motivation and passion for working in an organization supporting the protection of refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), stateless persons and migrants;
  • Ability to meet changing demands and to adapt to frequently changing priorities.

Languages

  • Fluency (written and spoken) in English and/or Spanish and/or French;
  • Fluency (written and spoken) in another official UN language used by the Department (Russian, Arabic) is an asset.
