The Online Course presents the key aspects of the protection of forcibly displaced and stateless persons. It is based on the analysis of the relevant international legal framework, including international refugee law, the UN Statelessness Conventions, and international human rights law, and the standards that guarantee that the rights of forcibly displaced and statelessness persons are respected and ensured. Participants will examine current protection challenges such as mixed movements, human trafficking and migrant smuggling, and climate-induced displacement. The course highlights the need for durable solutions and the role everyone can play in protection.

Objectives

The main goals of the Online Course are to:

  • Analyze the law, principles, and policies relating to the protection of forcibly displaced and stateless persons;
  • Define key concepts and employ the correct terminology with regards to refugees, migrants, IDPs, and stateless persons;
  • Raise awareness on the human rights issues faced by forcibly displaced and stateless persons and the need for durable solutions;
  • Develop a pragmatic and solutions-oriented attitude towards the situation faced by forcibly displaced and stateless persons;
  • Motivate participants to become advocates for persons in need of protection.
Target audience

The Course is developed primarily to benefit the following profiles of participants:

  • Junior professionals with up to three years of work experience in protection and related fields such as migration and human rights;
  • Postgraduate students with a background in international law.

A very good knowledge of English is a requisite for attendance.

Structure and Methodology

The Online Course is structured into live and self-paced sessions, with the objective to provide an in-depth analysis of the subject of the training, including cross-cutting issues.

  • Live sessions are pre-scheduled and usually last 120 minutes. These are delivered via Zoom for Education;
  • Self-paced sessions are completed at participants’ own pace, and must be undertaken before the beginning of each following class.

The Course strikes a balance between theory and practice and is delivered through a participatory and creative teaching methodology, aimed at facilitating the learning process and implementing the knowledge gained throughout the training. Participants will tackle real-world issues through case studies, group work, and other activities during sessions which also include lectures, presentations, and audio-visual support, taking into account the various learning styles of a diversified audience.

Participation quota amounts to € 400. It must be remitted before the start of the Course by bank transfer. Visa and/or Mastercard are also accepted on the website of the Institute (click here).

A limited number of scholarships is available for the Online Course and cannot therefore be guaranteed purely by application. Scholarships will depend upon funds available to the Institute thanks to the kind contribution of our donors. To apply for a scholarship, you must detail so in the dedicated field in the Registration Form.

The course will be conducted in English and reasonable language proficiency is required. There will not be simultaneous translation.

The official Certificate will be awarded only to those who attend the Course in full, including participation in live and self-paced sessions, and completion of assignments.
