Proceedings of the Sanremo Round Table on “Deprivation of liberty and armed conflicts: exploring realities and remedies”
The proceedings of the last Sanremo Round Table, held from 6 to 8 September 2018, are now available.
This collection of contributions made by renowned international experts and practitioners in the field of IHL explores realities and remedies of deprivation of liberty in armed conflict. The 41st Round Table on current issues of international humanitarian law (IHL), focussed on some of fundamental themes of international humanitarian law, such as the definition and the existence of a right to detain under customary international law, detention by non-state actors and armed groups, as well as the distinction between the law applicable to detainees in international armed conflict (IAC) and non-international armed conflict (NIAC).
The Round Table provided a forum to discuss other relevant topics including the transfer of detainees and responsibility in case of violations of detainees’ rights, particularly when they occur in multinational operations.
Around 200 participants, coming from different regions of the world including military experts, academics and representatives of governments, international organizations, IHL practitioners and NGOs, took part in last year Sanremo Round Table.
